There are blue and gray backgrounds for USA and CSA (Confederate) forces, as well as ranks colors for Artillery (Red), Cavalry (Yellow) and Infantry (Blue).  The officer ranks for the CSA use USA rank symbols for clarity (and because I was too lazy to format actual CSA ranks and color markings).  The USA ranks are from 1872 up to 1909, and so would have been in effect for the late 1870s-1890s.
