Description

The volvelle is composed of 4 concentric disks (corresponding to air, earth, fire, and water). The DM can hide or show each disk, in case you want to have your players find the individual pieces.

Once you have it the way you want, you can share the window with your players (right-button menu: Share Window).

Each disk has 8 symbols around the perimeter:
- Water has the phases of the moon
- Earth has a wolf, butterfly, frog, bare tree, otter, seashell, spider, and fungus
- Fire has a chrysalis, lizard, tadpole, jellyfish, octopus, leaf, beaver, and tree
- Air has a flower, caterpillar, bird, eggs, acorn, fish, snake, and a cut-out

The players can click on a disk to rotate it one position (45 degrees) clockwise. If they hold down the Alt, Control, or Shift key when clicking, it will rotate counterclockwise.

Each disk also has 8 runes or holes (to expose the layer beneath). The symbols and runes can be toggled on or off, in case you want to have your players "activate" them. I usually require the disks to be activated with the appropriate element (fire for the fire disk, etc). A good clue for this is to show the layer of dirt. When the players clean it off with water, the symbols on the water disk appear.

Depending on the alignment of all 4 disks, different runes are revealed.  You decide which alignment(s) will reveal the correct runes. For example, you might allow these combinations (some are more obvious than others):
- caterpillar, chrysalis, and butterfly
- eggs, tadpole, frog
- snake, jellyfish, spider (all may be venomous)
- acorn, tree, fungus
Or you might provide clues for various other combinations.

What about the moons? I like to require the current phase of the moon to be included in the alignment. So the solution to the puzzle changes over time. So if the moon is full, the appropriate symbols would have to be aligned with the full moon symbol.

The revealed runes represent the solution to the puzzle; you can use them in various ways, such as selecting three on a mosaic to open a secret door.
