Nunnery

Nunnery is a monster supplement for 5e that presents sacred sisterhoods as organized religious communities rather than background locations that exist only to offer sanctuary. These institutions maintain structured roles that support spiritual guidance, relic protection, healing, and defense of consecrated grounds.

The intent of this product is to give GMs a functional roster of low-CR NPCs suited for convents, cloisters, and sanctuaries that players may visit during a campaign. Nunneries frequently appear in adventures as places of refuge, pilgrimage, or counsel, yet the inhabitants are often undefined beyond a generic priest or nun. This ladder establishes a clear internal hierarchy of novices, caretakers, relic guardians, counselors, defenders, and leadership.

Encounters involving nunneries emphasize protection, sanctuary, and quiet authority rather than open battle. Most sisters avoid violence unless sacred relics, vulnerable residents, or consecrated grounds are threatened. When conflict occurs, defenders attempt to repel or restrain intruders while protecting noncombatants and preserving holy artifacts.

Religious affiliation, doctrine, and cultural traditions are intentionally left open. Some nunneries may serve a single deity, others a broader religious order, and some may follow ancient spiritual traditions tied to specific lands or relics. Use these stat blocks as adaptable tools for pilgrimage sites, isolated convents, urban sanctuaries, and holy relic vaults.

Nunnery Roster

Nunnery Postulant (CR 0): New initiate undergoing spiritual training while assisting with the daily work of the convent.

Nunnery Vowed Sister (CR 1/8): Full member of the sisterhood responsible for maintaining the convent and caring for guests and pilgrims.

Nunnery Relic Keeper (CR 1/4): Guardian of sacred artifacts who protects and maintains the holy relics entrusted to the nunnery.

Nunnery Confessor (CR 1): Spiritual counselor who offers guidance, hears confessions, and calms troubled minds.

Nunnery Silent Guardian (CR 2): Disciplined defender trained to protect the convent and the sacred relics under its care.

Nunnery Mother Superior (CR 3): Leader of the sisterhood who governs the convent and directs its spiritual mission.
