Description
This OGC is based on the 5th Edition SRD. This is a ruleset (in the Fantasy Grounds sense) because the changes made run on top of the 5E ruleset, but they make changes that break the way extensions would expect to interact with 5E. This could be seen as a collection of homebrew rules. This product includes a module with simplified classes designed for use in levels 1-5 and a reference manual explaining the detailed changes. This is best used by a DM who is at least somewhat familiar with 5E rules. The druid class is not implemented because that tends to be a complicated option in Fantasy Grounds.
The code for this ruleset is publicly available for free at https://github.com/seanmccarty/SimplerEdition. Purchasing on the Forge provides automatic updates and access to the reference manual with pre-built classes with all of the rules.
- Ability scores are now treated directly as their modifiers. This means your ability score would be -2, 0, 1, etc... rather than calculated
- Skills are now pre-determined for each class.
- Critical success (20) and critical failure (1) apply to check and saves.
- Initiative uses a d10 to increase the impact of Dexterity on turn order.
- Slight adjustments to how short and long rests work.
- Characters only have one level of spell slots, and they gain additional spells that can use that slot as they level up. Each level also increases the quantity of spells they can cast per rest. Spells are always prepared.
- Weapons are simplified to a few types and AC is now determined by class. This makes armor more descriptive than functional.
- Most classes abilities and options are predetermined. This simplifies planning for what the characters are capable of doing.
Some modifications to spells and classes may seem overpowered. Keep in mind, this is designed with kids in mind to help them feel powerful and not for someone trying to min/max their way through the game.
